Best Cities for YPs

Forbes recently posted an article listing the Top 10 U.S. cities for young professionals. In order to determine which cities deserved such recognition, the magazine conducted research in several key areas. Those areas included where the graduates of some of the country's elite universities were located ten years following commencement, where the best jobs were located, which cities had high quantities of young singles, and which cities offered the highest salaries.

Forbes' Top 10 list is as follows:

1. New York City
2. San Francisco
3. Atlanta
4. Los Angeles
5. Washington, D.C.
6. Boston
7. Seattle
8. Minneapolis
9. Philadelphia
10. Denver

What city does Forbes rate as the worst for YPs? Tampa.

What do you think of Forbes' list? How would you rank the cities in Brevard County? Leave us a comment below or send an e-mail to info@ypBrevard.com.

AAYP

Hey guys, ever heard of AARP? It's a membership organization leading positive social change and delivering value to people age 50 and over through information, advocacy and service. Sounds great, if you're over 50, but what about us YP's?

Not to worry. Now there is an organization doing exactly the same thing as AARP, but for Young Professionals. Check out AAYP HERE and join the YP movement for free!

"Live First, Work Second"

Way back when ypB was just a gleam in LEAD Brevard's eye, a woman from Next Generation Consulting, Rebecca Ryan, was hired to conduct an in depth report on attracting and retaining YP's in Brevard County. See the results of this full report HERE.

This same woman has just come out with a new book describing the YP mentality when it comes to choosing a job and where to live. And what better person to talk about these issues? For almost ten years now, Rebecca and her team at Next Generation Consulting have spent time listening to over seven thousand young people talk about their work and life priorities. "Live First, Work Second" speaks to the paradigm shift in thinking of the next generation. No longer do America's brightest new minds expect to work in the same company for 30 years. Today's YP's will have multiple careers and possibly dozens of jobs. Company loyalty is quickly becoming a thing of the past, and it is being replaced by a quality of life measure, both inside the workplace and out.

How do you feel about this topic? Did you pick to live here in Brevard first, then find a job/career, or vice-versa?

You can get your copy of Rebecca Ryan's book HERE. We would love to hear your reviews! Leave us a comment below!

YP's meet with Comissioner Mary Bolin

ypB's Social Committee Chair, Eric Camacho, shares his experience meeting Brevard County Comissioner Mary Bolin below:

On Wednesday, September 5, several members of ypB's Oversight Committee took part in a unique opportunity to interact with Brevard County Commissioner Mary Bolin. Having met previously with Kristin Bakke, President/CEO of LEAD Brevard, and Bino Campanini, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LEAD Brevard, Commissioner Bolin graciously offered to meet said members and listen to their needs and interests.

Upon arrival, Commissioner Bolin's guests were treated to a tour of her office, which is located in Brevard County's Government Center in Viera. The walls throughout her office were adorned with historical artifacts donated by the North Brevard Historical Society Museum. In addition, she explained to them that all of the furniture in her office is recycled, which meant that all of it came from a storage facility as a way to save county funds. The group then moved into the conference room for the start of the meeting.

Many topics were covered during the 90-minute meeting. The effect of the current housing market on young professionals was largely discussed because many YPs cannot afford home ownership and, as a result, find employment elsewhere. Also at issue, the need for more nighttime entertainment and venues. Young adults tend to travel to areas outside the county for after hours enjoyment, including places like CityWalk in Orlando.

Other issues were discussed amongst those in attendance. While there was no predetermined agenda, the meeting was productive and informative. Commissioner Bolin was able to reach out to the YP demographic and obtain valuable information about their needs and interests. Meanwhile, for those fortunate to attend, they viewed it as a critical step towards bridging young professionals and community leaders.

Let us know what issues are important to you and how you think your community leaders can help. Leave us a comment below or send an e-mail to info@ypBrevard.com.

Beach and BBQ!

Calling all ypB volunteers! If you've ever wanted to get more involved in your community, now is your chance. There are a couple of volunteer opportunities coming up this month and we need your help.

Saturday September 15th is Keep Brevard Beautiful's annual Coastal Clean-up at Pelican Park in Satellite Beach from 8am to Noon. This cleanup effort is the only event at which volunteers are urged to record all of the items they collect. The Coastal Cleanup is part of a world-wide litter reduction effort. For more information on this event, please visit the Ocean Conservancy website. The data from the event are used to educate our community about the problems associated with marine debris and the role we play in solving those problems. Trash bags, gloves and sunscreen will be provided. Don't forget to bring drinking water and a snack if desired. Free T-shirts while supplies last!

If beach cleaning isn't up your alley, then why not volunteer to work at the 6th Annual Grant BBQ Festival on Saturday September 29th? Enjoy live music and awesome BBQ while you help raise money for107.1 A1A's Toys 4 Kidz! Volunteers can work in blocks from 9am to noon, noon to 3pm, or 3pm to 7pm/8pm. The jobs vary from selling tickets, running ice/supplies to vendors, selling soda/water and selling T-shirts.

All interested volunteers please contact the Volunteer Committee Chair, Brandon Percy, at bpercy@ESINC.CC

Also, if you have any volunteer opportunities that you would like us to help organize, please leave us a comment below!

2007 Young Professionals Summit

The 2007 Young Professionals Summit is coming fast, and our very own Adam Gracia, Dawn Hamilton, and Michelle Verkooy are heading to Louisville, KY September 14th and 15th to represent Brevard County!

So I bet you're all wondering what the heck the Young Professionals Summit is, huh? It's a yearly event where Young Leaders from all across the country, and globe, congregate to address the generational leadership gap and engage in dialogue around “cool” communities and the attraction and retention of young talent in our communities. Attendees will learn how to build strong YP Organizations, increase their individual leadership effectiveness, and be inspired by how their peers are building better places to live and work.

We here at ypB prefer to think of this Summit as less of a gathering, and more of a "movement". The 2006 Conference in Madison, WI was our first taste of how much momentum this movement has really gained across the country. There were attendees from more than 30 states, and they all were practically bursting with ideas and passion for their own organization. We left the 2006 Summit with a renewed sense of excitement about what we were trying to accomplish in our own community. This year, with 2 years experience under our belt, we hope to gain even more insight into how we can better this organization.

So, fellow ypBers, here is the part where we would like to open up the forum to all of you. Dawn, Michelle and Adam will be your representatives for Brevard, and they are ready to take your concerns and suggestions with them to the Louisville Summit next weekend. What ideas do you have? Is there anything you would like them to discuss on your behalf? What are we doing well that we should share with the rest of the country's YP's? Leave us a comment below or send an e-mail to info@ypBrevard.com.

More PR for ypB!

In the Opinions section of the Florida Today, there is a terrific article about YP's and how we are Brevard's future. CLICK HERE to read all about it!

This brings up an interesting point about what ypB is trying to accomplish. We are trying to create a pipeline for community leaders. The older generation is going to need people to carry the torch when they retire, and hopefully, members of ypB will be there to step up to the plate and carry on their legacy.

Let us know how ypB can help you in this capacity. Where would you like to be in 10 years? How can we help you attain your goals? Leave us a comment below :)

Tip o' the hat to our Chair

Hey all!
FYI, our very own ypB Chair, Adam Gracia, was featured in an article in Florida Today just last week. CLICK HERE to check it out!

Here is a direct quote from the article:

"A lot of people don't realize the potential of this program. It really
does allow you to become engaged in the community and become a community leader
now."

Well said, Adam. We have touched briefly on this before, but we just want to reitterate that Young Professionals of Brevard is what you make of it. It is an avenue that will lead you as far as you are willing to travel...you are only limited by your own imagination. So get involved, introduce yourself around, and make lasting friendships. You never know what opportunities might be awaiting you at the next ypB event!

Generation Gap

It's a well known fact that every generation has it's own culture, it's own morals and it's own way of doing things. Because society is changing by the decade these days, this generational gap has never been more evident. Within one corporation, you will usually have Baby Boomers (born from 1940-1960), GenXers (born from 1961-1981), and GenYers (born after 1982), each with their own philosophies, quirks, and habits. As you can imagine, or have experienced firsthand yourself, this can create quite the frustrating work environment when generations butt heads.

Most Baby Boomers have been with the same company for 20 years or more and usually hold positions of authority. Often enough, they subscribe to the philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". They have been doing things the same way for many years, and don't see a reason to change the system.

GenXers, on the other hand, are more concerned with finding the right job for them. They are not afraid to change positions or companies and are a little resentful with the whole notion of "climbing the corporate ladder". They are often more concerned with a work-life balance and subscribe to the philosophy of "work to live, instead of live to work".

GenYers are more often impatient and want what they are doing now to be as enjoyable and meaningful as possible. They see their corporate environment as inefficient and would like to do things on their own time, not during the 9-5 workday that their Baby Boomer boss insists upon. Most GenYers are highly motivated with great ideas, but struggle to get those ideas heard because of their "newbie" factor. They subscribe to the philosophy of "give me a job, and I'll get it done my way".

What do you guys think? Are these philosophies accurate? What generational philosophy do you subscribe to? Do you have a story where the generation gap between you and your co-workers was painfully evident? Do you have any advice on how to deal with another generation? Let us know! We haven't made any decisions on this yet, but we would like to know your opinions on this matter. Should ypB join an online community? Why or why not? Which one should we join? Leave us your comments below!

Join a committee!

Update: Please note that the meeting date of the Personal Development Committee has changed from Friday to Tuesday!

Did you know that ypB has 7 different committees that members can become involved in? In fact, we've got two committee meetings coming up in the next few days; Personal Development Committee and the Volunteer Committee.

The Personal Development Committee was formed to help YP's transition into responsible adulthood. The committee is currently working on holding a first-time home buyers seminar, an investment seminar, and a monthly/quarterly book club focusing on how to succeed in your career. Does this interest you? Would you like to help pick out the reading materials for the book club? Are you a realtor or a mortgage broker who can offer some insight on buying a house? Then why not join the Personal Development Committee?! The next meeting will be held at Chowders (corner of US-1 and Suntree Blvd) at 5:30pm next Tuesday, July 17th.

Maybe volunteering for a good cause is more your style? Then we've got the committee for you! The ypB Volunteer Committee will hold its next meeting At Chili's in Melbourne (corner of Wickham and Sarno) at 5:30pm next Monday, July 16th. They will be continuing discussions about several upcoming events, including a potential poker tournament! Come ready to brainstorm new ideas and help solidify current volunteer opportunities!

See you all there!

Monday, July 09, 2007

Would you like to see ypB hold more cultural arts events? How about a group outing to see a show, a concert, or a play? Have a particular event in mind? Then why not join the Cultural Arts Committee?!

The Cultural Arts Committee is having its next meeting this Tuesday night, July 10th, at Murdock's in Cocoa Village at 5:30pm. Bring your ideas and get prepared to brainstorm new ones! We need YOU on our team!

Also, don't forget to SAVE THE DATE for our Second Anniversary Sandbar Soiree! This is a YP's must-see event of the year! There will be a DJ, great food, prize give-aways and much much more. So mark Friday August 24th from 7-10pm at the Melbourne Crowne Plaza on your calendar and don't miss it!

Legislative Awards!

Alright scavenger hunters, this is your very last weekend to visit all those galleries and eateries and answer the clues! They are expecting you, so don't let 'em down! And remember to get that film developed so you can bring your pictures on Thursday for major bonus points!

We would now like to switch you attention over to a civic matter. ypB fully supports young professionals getting more involved in politics and happenings in our community. Now is your chance to show your support for some strong advocates for business. The Brevard County Council of Chambers presents the Legislative Awards June 26th at the Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place beginning at 7:30am. Click HERE to see the flyer and to RSVP.

We would like to see a good YP turnout for this event. The cost is only $5, so if you can spare the time, then make your presence known to these local political and industry leaders. Let's show the rest of Brevard that YP's are active and engaged in our community!

Make a difference!

The Volunteer Committee, co-chaired by both Brandon Percy and Kim Carpenter, held its inaugural meeting on Monday June 18, 2007 with members Jonathon Krauser, Grady Marshall, and Kristin Johnson in attendance.

This initial meeting was held to brainstorm possible community service events where YP’s could volunteer their time. The Volunteer Committee would like to provide a variety of opportunities to all YP’s by offering community service events at least once a month.

Volunteer Committee co-chair, Brandon Percy, had this to add, "By increasing our volunteer frequency, we hope to spread the word that YP’s are out there making a positive difference in the community, and hopefully we will gain some name recognition in the process."

We here at ypB are very excited that the Volunteer Committee has stepped up their game! We also hope this excitement is contagious because the Volunteer Committee needs your help! They have brainstormed some ideas of their own, but they need to know what you want to do. Do you have any volunteer events you would like us to hold? Do you have a favorite charity you would like to see get a little TLC from ypB? Please let us know your ideas by leaving a comment below, or by sending Brandon Percy an email at bpercy@esinc.cc.

Art demonstration this weekend!

For those of you that have taken a real shine to our Scavenger Hunt, why not take your culture to the next level with a painting demonstration? A world-renowned American impressionist whose works have been acquired by the likes of billionaire Donald Trump and director Ron Howard will hold a free art demonstration for residents this weekend.

Robert LeBron will discuss the techniques used in his paintings during a demonstration at the Palm Bay Community Center this Saturday. The cultural demonstration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the community center, located at 1502 Port Malabar Blvd. LeBron is known for using only a palette knife with oil paint to create works centered on urban street life along images of day-to-day Americana.

LeBron, a New York native, lived in Puerto Rico before becoming an artist. He developed his palette knife technique in Spain. For more information call 952-3443 or visit RobertLeBron.com to see a gallery of LeBron’s artwork. Article from Florida Today.

To do this week.

We hope this weekend proved a success for all you scavenger hunters out there! Here are some of the eatery signs you might've seen on your travels across Brevard:

The goal of the Membership Committee is to conduct and monitor membership building programs and efforts. We need your help to make ypB a thriving community! All those interested please email info@ypBrevard.com for more details!

Also, Emerging Leaders (EL) is having their "Third Thursday" this week at 6pm at The Avenues' Pizza Gallery. Also on exhibit with the butterflies are beautifully-colored turaco birds. So show your support for our fabulous local zoo and take a trip into Viera for the afternoon!

Happy Father's Day on Sunday!

Alright ypB hunters, we're entering the third weekend of the Cultural Arts Scavenger Hunt, so gas up, buckle in, and head out to soak up some art! It's still not too late to join in on the fun! Visit our website (http://www.ypbrevard.com/) to download a copy of the map and questions. You could easily knock out the entire sheet in one Saturday if you are diligent!

As you all probably already know, Father's Day is this Sunday, the 17th. Father's Day was initiated by a woman named Senora Smart Dodd from Spokane Washington while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Her father, Henry Jackson Smart, had raised Sonora after her mother died, and she wanted him to know how special he was to her. Her father was born in June, so she chose that month to celebrate the new holiday!

ypB thinks Father's Day is a fantastic idea, and we would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to all you YP fathers out there that are doing such a good job. So here is a little tip on how to diaper a baby from Jimmy Piersal in "man" terms:
Spread the diaper in the position of the diamond with you at bat. Then, fold second base down to home and set the baby on the pitcher's mound. Put first base and third together, bring up home plate and pin the three together. Of course, in case of rain, you gotta call the game and start all over again.
Have a great Father's Day everyone...and don't forget to call!

Turtle walk!

Tonight from 8-11pm, a small group of ypBers will get a chance to witness something very few of us have seen in real life...a sea turtle crawling her way onto Melbourne Beach, digging a hole in the sand, and laying her eggs. This exciting opportunity has been brought to us by Hubbs Sea World Research Institute.

Some of you may remember their informative talk at Red Lobster, Merritt Island a few weeks ago. HSWRI is a non-profit organization dedicated to using science and technology to advance positive change in marine mammal ecosystems. VP for Florida Research, Dr. Duane De Freese, describes Brevard county as "perfectly suited to build and sustain a world-class center for marine and coastal research." We should all feel lucky to live in a community that is so environmentally conscious.

If you missed out on this opportunity to witness sea turtle nesting, don't fret. We hope to arrange another outing with HSWRI later this summer. We also hope to partner with HSWRI for volunteer opportunities, so stay tuned to find out how you can help!

We're taking over!

Ever wonder if other YP's from across the country have a special community or program set up just for them? The answer is a definitive YES! The YP movement is taking the country by storm and organized groups are popping up all over the place!

At YPCommons you will find over 200 listed YP organizations/programs that are dedicated to integrating YP's into their community. And those are just the ones we know about! There are probably hundreds more that haven't advertised on this website!

YPCommons also has their own BLOG where you can interact with other YP's from across the nation. Cool, huh?

Not only that, but why not become a YP Panelist and get your voice heard while earning some $$ or winning awesome prizes?

So take a gander at some of the other YP's websites. What do you like/dislike about their group? What are they doing that you would like us to do? We need your input! Leave your comments below, or e-mail your suggestions to info@ypBrevard.com.

Flight and Fun

Today's post consists of two things that we think YP's would want to know about. First off, Space Shuttle Atlantis is poised for liftoff tomorrow (Friday) at 7:38pm. The crew will be restarting the International Space Station (ISS) assembly after a five month hiatus due to hail damage last February. For live updates on Atlantis' progress visit the Mission Status Center of Spaceflight Now. Let's all show our Brevard County pride by stepping outside for a few minutes tomorrow night and witnessing seven brave souls journey where few have gone before. Nowhere else in the entire country has these bragging rights. It only happens right here folks!

Also, since we are so close to Orlando, we thought you might be interested in a Universal Theme Park Annual Pass. They have a special going on right now, buy one year, get the second year FREE with a Coca-Cola coupon from Walgreens! The Annual Pass gets you into both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure FREE with no blackout dates, FREE parking, and discounts on food and merchandise! Click HERE for details.

And one more reminder: if you want to help plan our 2nd Anniversary Birthday Bash, we're meeting tonight at 5:30pm at Chili's in The Avenues!

Know your YP Groups

As much as we love ourselves here at Young Professionals of Brevard, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you three other YP groups that are in your community. We have made them permanent links on the right sidebar------------->

Emerging Leaders is the YP group for United Way of Brevard. And for those of you that have been living in a hole in the ground for the last half of a century, United Way of Brevard is a huge fund raising organization that donates to agencies such as the American Red Cross, ARC of Brevard, and the Salvation Army. UW wanted to focus on getting the YP's involved in their efforts, and to train the next generation to take over as community leaders, so they formed Emerging Leaders. EL's primary focus lies in volunteerism, board training, and fund raising for UW.

Vivace Society is the YP group for the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. The Vivace Society exists to cultivate Brevard’s younger business professionals into an emerging generation of BSO patrons and supporters. They hold events such as a Meet the Musician Soiree, backstage tours of performances, and discounted concerts.

And lastly, the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast has a YP/New Grad Retention and Recruitment Program called ypCONTACT. Their main focus is on attraction of young talent in Brevard by assisting local employers with the resources they need for recruitment.

Together, we all encompass your YP community here in Brevard. We are all focused and dedicated to making your community in which you live a thriving environment for a young professional. Can you feel the love :)

A dog of a different color

Well, our Cultural Scavenger Hunt is in its infancy as of this morning. We hope some of you were able to visit some of the venues on the map over the weekend.

We stopped by LoPressionism Gallery in downtown Melbourne to view the wonderful artworks and also to pick up one of the prizes for the contest: a signed copy of Ron Burns' book, "The Dogs of Ron Burns". This colorful artist has been featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition donating his time and artistic talent by painting a mural in a children's room. He has also been named the Official Artist for National Dog Day, and has recently had his artwork displayed in a major Hollywood film, Deja Vu, staring Denzel Washington and Val Kilmer. Check out his website HERE.

So for all you dog lovers out there, or for those of you that just love colorful and fun art, get yourselves into the listed galleries and answer the questions to earn a chance to win this awesome prize! And don't forget to take lots of pictures!!

We've been zapped!

Hello fellow ypB-ers!

We hope everyone enjoyed last night's social at Chowders. We just wanted to let you all know that you've been zapped by Florida Today's Zap Squad. So if you haven't seen the photos in the paper today, then check out the link below

Also, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to your new ypB blog. Here you can post suggestions or comments about what you like, what you don't like, what you want us to do, etc. This is your community, so help us make it better! We want this blog to be completely dynamic, so stop by often because we plan on keeping it current.

Last night at Chowders we anounced the official kickoff of our first ever Cultural Scavenger Hunt! For those of you that weren't able to make it out, here is a link to the printable map and questions so you can participate too! There are just a couple of points we want to make about this contest:

1) 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will be given away per answer sheet. That means if you want to work in a team and turn in one answer sheet, you may have to share a prize with your fellow teammates.
2) Don't forget to take lots of pictures! You get extra points for photographing your cultural journey...the more points you get, the better your chances of winning the contest! Scrapbooking anyone?
3) Turn in your answer sheets and pictures/scrapbooks at the June 28th social by 6:30pm. Prizes will be given away that night and you must be present to win!
4) HAVE FUN!

Use this blog to update us on your scavenger hunt progress!
